Resource Technology Cluster Research Project

Project Overview

Technology - application of science, research and expertise to achieve commercial and industrial objectives.

Resource Technology – application of science, research and expertise to achieve commercial and industrial objectives in Natural Resources Industries.

The Innovation Resource Centre is undertaking a research project to identify opportunities for regional Resource Technology firms and to enable growth and development of the Resource Technology cluster in central BC. We expect to identify essential information that will enable the development and execution of a strategy and action plan for the further growth of a vital resource technology cluster in central BC.

The key objectives of this project are:

  • understand the sector better in order to enable cluster development.
  • support the growth and development of resource technology companies that are active in the region
  • identify opportunities for expansion of current companies and/or attraction of new entrepreneurs.

Deliverables expected from the project include:

  • A current and comprehensive census of firms in the resource technology cluster and their major customers.
  • A directory of resource technology supply and service companies.
  • A labour market analysis of value to government and industry that begins to quantify current and future human resource needs in the sector.
  • An analysis of cluster opportunities and market expansion.
  • An analysis of challenges to the growth of individual companies, investment attraction and the cluster in general, in order to identify priorities for capacity and core competencies development.
  • A draft strategy & action plan for development of the resource technology cluster in Central British Columbia.
  • The identification and development of support services to assist resource technology companies increase their markets and sales. This will include a plan for delivery of these services.

The core research for this project began in February 2007. The planning and analysis is expected to be complete by fall of 2007 with identified actions commencing immediately.

The following link represents the output of the first phase of a three phase provincial project. The purpose of phase 1 was to prepare inventories of the technology companies found within the participating regions of BC.  A provincial survey was conducted to identify the needs and economic characteristics of the businesses: Provincial Report-October 2007
