NIMG Database Survey

Northern Interior Mining Group Database Project
A project supported by the 16/97 Economic Alliance
I                  Introduction
The purpose of the survey.
The purpose of the survey is to identify regional goods and services suppliers who are either already involved in the mining sector or are interested in doing business in the mining sector. The database will be used to the develop a Mining Services Directory.  In turn, the Mining Services Directory will be used to promote regional services to the mining sector both in and outside of the region.
Supporters of the survey include the Chambers of Commerce of Burns Lake, Fort St James, Mackenzie, McBride, Prince George, Valemount, Vanderhoof, Quesnel and Wells, the Association for Mineral Exploration British Columbia, the Central Interior Logging Association,  the Prince George Construction Association and others.
Overview.
The economy of the Northern Interior has long been driven by the forest industry.
The Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic brings with it a substantial, and for all practical purposes, permanent, reduction in the size of the Interior’s forest sector economy.
In recent years, however, demand for coal and minerals has increased significantly and, as a result, the Northern Interior mining sector is poised on the edge of a substantial expansion.
Suppliers of goods and services to the forest sector may be well positioned to transition to becoming supplier of good s and services to the mining sector.
While the looming recession has already had an impact on mining activity and no one is at all certain as to how deep the recession will be, nor how long it will last, it is reasonable to expect that demand for mineral resources will recover as the world economy recovers.
The Highway 16/97 Economic Alliance and the Northern Interior Mining Group believe that the time in the downturn would be well spent in preparing to be ready to take advantage of the opportunity the mining sector offers when the economic recovery gets underway.
